Pelee Island the Most Southernly Inhabited Place in Canada.

Pelee Island is located on a migrational path for birds, butterflies and dragonflies.  People come from around the world to observe the bird migration in the spring and the butterfly migration in the fall.
In in early May there is the Spring Song Weekend hosted by esteemed Canadian author Margaret Atwood.  It is during this event that there has been as many as 144 bird species counted in a 24 hour period.  That number is astonishing to me because I grew up in a city.
In the last week of July there is an annual butterfly count this count has been a tradition since 1998.  The island has had as many as 76 each year the numbers fluctuate with weatherand the use of pesticides.
The island is best experienced over three nights/four days if you have the time.  I recommend doing the Sanctuary early and if you are only on the island earlier the stone lighthouse or Fish Point.  There are many other places to visit like Mission Hall, the new NCC wetland project, the winery, Scudder Marina (there is Scudder Beach Restaurant), Vin Villa, and Stone Road Alivar (Ontario Nature Park)…
    The Pelee Shop rents bikes.
